On the way to Dar es Salaam

Fri, Mar 6, 2010

We have another long drive day in the truck today. The journey is made longer by the many delays for road construction. We have been on the road for nearly three hours and I wouldn’t even want to ask how many km we’ve come.

The tedium of the drive; however, was broken nicely as our route took us through a game park. Within the first 15 minutes we saw many herds of kudu or impalas, two clusters of elephants, including babies, cape buffalo, giraffes, and zebras. Many of them were on the left side of the truck and it was our good fortune that we are sitting on that side.

Dar es Salaam

We are camped right alongside the Indian Ocean. We rolled in pretty late last night, but after dinner we took the time to wade in the water. It is so warm it felt like bath water. I’m looking forward to getting in for a swim and maybe doing some snorkeling. We go to Zanzibar Island in a few days, which is just a short distance from here, and we’re planning to do some SCUBA diving. I may even be able to dive without a wetsuit for once.
