Stacks of rocks
Humans are funny animals. We have stopped now at numerous rocky beaches and at every one, it seems each person who has visited has made a rock stack, so that they are all down the shore like little sentinels keeping an eye on the place. Maybe it's because the rocks here are so perfect for stacking. They are beautifully flat with lots of layers, some shiny with some kind of ore that makes them look like aluminum or jade green with streaks of white running through them or perfectly milk white. They have been tumbled by the ocean or ground down by glaciers or otherwise pummeled by Mother Nature so their edges are smooth and they feel good in the hand. The urge to leave my mark has struck me every time, and so our little stacks of carefully selected stones join all the others waiting to welcome the next visitors.
